what happened:

On Sunday, September 18th, Hurricane Fiona has wreaked havoc across Puerto Rico. Our sister shelter, El Faro de los Animales in Humacao, suffered catastrophic damage from fallen trees, flooding, and mudslides. The only road to the shelter is now completely washed away.

Our team is safe, and they took as many of the satos and gatos as possible into their homes. They were able to get to the shelter yesterday to check on the few still there, and all are safe. Right now, there is no electricity or water and going to the shelter requires a treacherous hike up a muddy hillside.

We are urgently seeking donations. You can help with:

  • Shelter repairs. We don't yet know the extent of the damage; our team on the ground doesn't have power and has had difficulty communicating with us. We do know that the road leading to El Faro was washed away in a landslide and that multiple fallen trees and flooding have damaged the buildings.

  • Clean water. El Faro needs bottled water both for staff and the animals while Puerto Rico rebuilds its infrastructure.

  • Getting the satos & gatos off the island. After any storm, there are even more dogs and cats who need rescuing. Let's get the current animals in El Faro’s care off the island so they have the capacity to help even more.

Your donation will allow El Faro to rebuild, both temporarily as well as more permanently, and provide food, water, medicine, and other assistance. It will also enable us to bring more dogs to the mainland US and find them loving homes.

In the coming days, we will be looking for additional support, through Amazon or other providers. We are also in the process of organizing teams to go to Puerto Rico when conditions allow for clean up and repair. Sign up here if you'd like to stay updated on how you can help.

We thank you for considering this emergency appeal in support of El Faro at this critical time and your support of ALR’s ongoing sato and gato rescue mission.
